New EU offshore venture, Trident Archäologie, launched by Wessex Archaeology

Published:  29 January, 2020

Wessex Archaeology Ventures has announced the launch of Trident Archäologie, a European subsidiary headquartered in Rostock, Germany. The company will provide marine archaeological services to developers working in the Baltic Sea and North Sea, with a particular focus on delivering expert, data-driven advice to the offshore renewables market.

Headed up by Directors Dr Paul Baggaley and Paul Sealey, Trident Archäologie will benefit from the technical expertise and experience of Wessex Archaeology’s large multi-disciplinary team, with many years’ experience in successful offshore energy projects, alongside the European archaeological knowledge of Manager Ralph Behr.

The company’s targeted, data-driven approach will ensure that archaeological analysis required by regional planning authorities for offshore renewable schemes are accurately and efficiently undertaken in the timeframe required, to ensure smooth and rapid progress through the planning system.

Director of Trident Archäologie and Wessex Archaeology, Paul Baggaley, said: “We’re very excited to launch our newest venture into the growing European offshore market. The North Sea is familiar ground for us, having supplied services to 90% of the UK’s offshore windfarms over the past 15 years. Our clients will benefit from this huge body of experience, and we’re looking forward to helping developments move smoothly through the planning process, managing requirements set by State Archaeologists and making sure that any archaeological works are planned from the start to minimise impact on project timelines.”

Trident Archäologie Manager, Ralph Behr (pictured), said: “We are pleased to be able to continue to build on our existing experience and relationships in the European offshore market. We’ve identified the growing need for professional archaeological services which add value to client schemes, and Trident Archäologie will provide access to the expertise and capacity they need to meet the restrictions and opportunities presented by the current offshore wind development program.”

Trident Archäologie is wholly owned by Wessex Archaeology, the UK’s leading archaeology and heritage company, and an educational charity. The organisation is the clear market leader in providing archaeological services in the British offshore sector, having supplied archaeological services for over 90% of all the UK’s offshore windfarm schemes, and provided essential input into the development of the UK’s offshore regulatory system over the last 15 years. The expansion into the European market comes only six months after the successful launch of the company’s US offshore joint venture, CEWA Inc.
