Emerson says its AMS 6500 Machinery Health Monitor is now certified for Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2, providing users greater confidence against asset and process failures. The company says common examples of process applications where SIL 2 advanced safety integrities are needed are steam and gas turbines in power plants and critical refinery and nuclear industry assets.

Dr Tony Trapp, executive chairman of Osbit and a leading figure in the North East offshore industry, has been awarded the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2017 New Year’s Honours. Dr Trapp is said to have been instrumental in the formation and success of the subsea technology industry in North East England having been a co-founder of Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD), and the founder of IHC Engineering Business and, more recently, Osbit.

For this reason, the German Aerospace Centre reports it has created with its RoboDrive motors a new motor technology which unites a high torque development and performance density – and this with minimal weight and use of construction space. The motor developers have relied on safety brakes by mayr power transmission. Since July 2003, organisations in EU (and many other regions) must follow the directives to protect employees from explosion risk in areas with an explosive atmosphere. The new ATEX directive (2104/34/EU) became mandatory for manufacturers and operators on 29th April 2016 and is stated in article 44 of the directive.
