Mechanical testing can often be deemed as unnecessary, costly and time consuming and, in today’s world of vast computer modelling and simulation power, it can be hard to argue against this. To cut costs, companies may decide to reduce time and budget spent on testing. However, unanticipated failures of in-service products will have far greater cost and time implications.

Vroon Offshore Services Aberdeen has been awarded a long-term contract with BP. Under the multi-million pound contract, Vroon Offshore will provide emergency response and rescue vessels (ERRVs) to support BP’s on-going and future operations in the North Sea and West of Shetland. The contract is for two years with the option to extend to five.

ENDRESS+HAUSER says its iTherm StrongSens sensor cuts replacement costs and improves safety. The company says processes with high vibrations caused by pumps, compressors and turbines, for example, can often lead to premature failure of temperature sensors and increased operational costs as sensors need to be replaced more frequently and more worryingly, unreliable temperature monitoring on rotating parts (such as bearings) can lead to a safety risk through overheating of equipment.

Global Marine Group (GMG), a leading provider of offshore engineering services to the renewables, telecommunications and oil & gas industries, has announced that it has successfully completed a remedial cable burial project for Prinses Amaliawindpark (PAWP), a wind farm off the Netherlands’ West Coast. Saab Seaeye customer, Stinger Technology, reports it has found a way to penetrate the labyrinth inside offshore production tanks in search of environmental contaminates prior to decommissioning. The company says it managed to squeeze a unique underwater robotic systems configuration loaded with sampling technology through a 150 cm square hatch to search the tank’s internal maze of baffles, and navigate along 25.5 cm diameter pipe-runs of curves and bends.

In order to further improve the safety of employees working at its LNG plant at Melkøya, Statoil reports it has has purchased 300 FX60 LED floodlights from lighting specialist Glamox. The Melkøya plant in Norway is the world’s northernmost liquefied natural gas facility. The gas is transported from the Snøhvit gas field – the first offshore development in the Barents Sea.

Mokveld says its low shear Typhoon System has once again demonstrated the robustness of the technology. The system is installed on the Statoil operated Troll C platform controlling well fluids from the Fram Vest field. The company says operating at the most challenging conditions for which the unit is designed, the Typhoon System showed an impressive 60% improvement in the produced water quality (OiW) in comparison to the conventional choke valve that is installed in parallel with the unit.
